Empezamos... The New Sound of Latino Voices
Far too long Latinos in the USA have hid in the shadows driven by their sense of being the good guest and not upsetting their host. Well, here's a bit of news... we're sick and tired of the dark and we're not gonna take it any more! In 1992, as America prepared to celebrate it 500th discovery anniversary there came a debate regarding the true influence of the Spanish empire over the land that would become known as America. The debate resulted in Hispanics finding themselves in the role of historic barbarians. Nevermind the steps that were taken to create the US, during it's territorial growth, against native Americans and it's southern neighbors in Mexico. Remember the Alamo!!
Instead of fighting for our rightful acknowledgement of historic contribution, we Latinos remained quiet and in some instances apologetic. After all, we brought disease, destruction and dispair and really had no reason to celebrate the Spanish empires participation in history. Meanwhile, during the same time, Italian Americans stood proud of Christopher Colombus who lead the world to its new expansion.
So, imagine the surprise of all those political leaders in Washington when suddenly an unchallenged imigration discussion turned into an all out invasion of an issue that is prodominantly a Latino topic. Suddenly, the Latino has become one of the top 3 political issues in the American debate. The guest it seems have had enough of waiting to speak when spoken to, and raised up their voices to a deafening pitch. Now, many chose to call this an imigration issue and speak of the need to protect the borders of our country. But, I chose to call it what it is, a Latino Issue! Let's face it no one has once mentioned building a wall on the East, West or Northern border of the USA. The conversation of a wall is without any room for doubt, a discussion regarding Latinos. Yes, a wall on the southern border does not help to keep out anyone, other then people of spanish speaking nations. So, why is this discussion called an imigration problem? Even Latino politicians have made comments that we should not lose sight of the big picture regarding imigration and should, "check our flags at the door". Well since i don't hear any discussions of walls being built in Poland, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Russia, China, Iran, Albania, or any other country representative of illegal imigration in the U.S.A., it leaves me to wonder. Why we should check our flags at the door? However, maybe we should check our flags in and chose to represent ourselves instead by our common language. This way we can show those in Washington how really loud our voices are...
Siembra Siempre
